New weather software

After a long time using FreeWX I have moved over to Cumulus software. This is because FreeWX is no longer being developed, and Cumulus is currently well supported.

FreeWX served me well, I have no complaints.

Unfortunately I now have the job of converting the past logs, going back to 2003.

Sorted a wunderground map at long last

Weatherbonk had just become too unreliable. The Google embedded gadget is also more versatile.

I thought the lightning had fried the wind sensor, but eventually, after resetting the weather station, it came back. The reset knocked out the barometer calibration and I still have to update the accumulated rainfall which has been lost.

Using Google street view, see bottom of page. You can just make out the anemometer and wind direction mast on the far chimney stack, the white cylinder on the wall is the outdoor temperature and humidity sensor. The white blob on the ridge to the right is the rainguage. The indoor temperature, humidity and pressure sensor is - indoors.

Multiple power failures

Exhausted the capacity of the UPS so we have lost all uploads between 10:38 and 14:01 today

Lots of problems with CWOP feed into APRS

On 19/1/08 I was prevented from uploading to the APRS server network, on the 21st I found out why. I was sending data at one minute intervals, whilst this makes a nice graph which captures wind gusts, it (along with a large number of other stations) creates too large a load on the servers. There was an announcement on 16/1 which I missed.

The proper answer to this is to change the way some software uploads (FreeWX, which I use, is OK), in order to load balance and avoid many stations trying to upload at exactly the same time on the minute boundary. The short term solution is to increase the upload interval.

I am now using cwop.aprs.net and have reduced my upload rate in line with the recommendations and am back on line.

There is a problem wth the anemometer recording high wind spikes. This is during thunderstorm activity, either there is a static build up or the radio transmission is disrupted.

Hopefully, earthing the mast will stop it.

Uploads blocked
